Ariel Detwiler is currently finishing the third and final year of her DMA in bassoon at the University of Minnesota, studying with Norbert Nielubowski. She also holds a Masters degree in Bassoon from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music studying with William Ludwig, and a Bachelors degree in bassoon from DePauw University. An active freelance musician and woodwind doubler in the twin cities, Ariel performs in various bands, orchestras, musical pits, and collaborates in many chamber music groups, including Duo 231 with French Horn player Sam Crocker (also in Encore) and the Bdote 7 reed quintet. Ariel is no stranger to the stage-- she won the DePauw University Concerto competition in 2010, and in 2018 she won the second annual Band Concerto competition at the University of Minnesota. With a lifelong passion for music education, she teaches her own private studio, instructs the Woodwind Techniques course at the University of Minnesota, and is the adjunct professor of bassoon at Dordt University. When she is not performing, Ariel is an avid baker, calligrapher, and gardener. This is Ariel's fourth year performing as a core member of the Encore Wind Ensemble.
